A simple, but detailed explanation (AHYA)
Tafseer of Surah Al-Fatihah
Excerpt:
Ar-Rahmaan is more intense than Ar-Raheem – Because Ar-Rahmaan is the one endowed with Mercy that extends to all of the creations in this world and to the believers in the Hereafter. Ar-Raheem on the other hand is the One endowed with Mercy that extends to only the believers on the Day of Judgement.
This is understood by the narration reported from Eesa, as mentioned by ibn Katheer and others – that Essa (alaihi as-salaam) said: “Ar-Rahmaan: the One Who shows Mercy in this world and the Hereafter. Ar-Raheem: the One Who shows Mercy in the Hereafter” …more.

A detailed explanation (Tayyibaat)
Ar-Rahmaan & Ar-Raheem
Excerpt:
Ar-Rahman is structure of fa’laan, Ar-Raheem is structure of fa’eel. They both have mubaalaghah (intensification). What is the difference? Rahman has more mubaalagah (intensification) than Raheem. So ar Rahmaan indicates the One who has extensive and great mercy. Who is Ar Raheem then? He is the One who has extensive and great mercy but He expresses it on the ones whom He chooses. So Ar-Rahman extends to all of His creation including disbelievers, and Ar-Raheem extends to Allah’s special mercy only for the believers. …more.
